What Are Horse Trials?
Horse trials are equestrian competitions that test a horse and rider’s ability across three different disciplines: dressage, cross-country, and show jumping. In dressage, competitors perform a series of controlled movements to demonstrate precision, balance, and communication between horse and rider. This is followed by cross-country, where they tackle a course of solid obstacles over varied terrain, designed to test stamina, bravery, and endurance. Finally, in show jumping, pairs navigate a course of coloured fences in an arena, where accuracy and technique are key. Events such as the Bradwall Horse Trials bring these phases together, offering an exciting and varied day out where spectators can watch top-level sport alongside grassroots competition in a relaxed outdoor setting.
